The Kerala backwaters are nearly 1000 kilometres of rivers, canals and lakes running parallel to the coastline. The major form of transport for people living in the many towns and villages is water-borne. Imagine your kids paddling to school by canoe!
We had a luxury houseboat, with our captain, steward and cook to provide for every need. Some parts of the waterways are very busy, with local trade mixing with the houseboats; some parts are quieter.
After a day’s cruising the beautiful waterways, we stopped at a riverside shop to choose our freshly caught dinner. We procured some enormous prawns, which our on-board chef cooked to perfection. At night we tied up by the river-bank to stroll in the twilight before dinner.
This is a wonderful experience, relaxing in the cooling breezes from the water, and taking in the sights as Keralites go about their business on and off the water. We plan to share this experience with others, also offering the unique opportunity of cooking lessons aboard the houseboat!
